Discovered by Louis Leakey in 1959 at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. This specimen, called OH5, belongs to the Middle Pleistocene, and was dated at 1.8 million years. Subsequent findings of this species occurred in northern Tanzania, in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. The Australopithcus coexisted with Homo boisei for 1.5 million years.
